What Does Low Poly Mean?
Low poly means a 3D model built from relatively few polygons, either for performance or as a faceted art style. Polygon budgets, examples and how to make one.
Low poly means a 3D model made of relatively few polygons, the flat faces that form every 3D surface. The term describes two things: models kept light so they run fast in games, AR and the web, and an art style that shows its flat, faceted shapes on purpose.
| Polygon | A flat face, usually a triangle or a quad |
| Low poly | Few polygons for the job, often hundreds to a few thousand |
| High poly | Many polygons, often hundreds of thousands or millions |
| Why | Performance, small files, or a stylized look |
| Made by | Modeling by hand, retopology, decimation or AI |
How many polygons is low poly?
There is no fixed number. Low poly is relative to the platform and the object: a character for a mobile game might use a few thousand triangles, while the same character in a PC game could use tens of thousands and still count as optimized.
| Use | Typical face count |
|---|---|
| Mobile games, web viewers | 1,000-5,000 |
| PC and console games | 5,000-30,000 |
| Film, renders, 3D printing | 10,000-200,000 |
Game engines usually count triangles, because every quad is split into two triangles for rendering. AI-generated and scanned models often start at hundreds of thousands of triangles, which is why they are reduced before use in real-time projects.
What is the difference between low poly and high poly?
A high poly model carries every detail in its geometry. A low poly model keeps only the shape and gets its fine detail from textures, especially normal maps baked from the high poly version.
| Low poly | High poly | |
|---|---|---|
| Polygon count | Low | High |
| Detail comes from | Textures and normal maps | Geometry |
| Performance | Fast | Slow in real time |
| File size | Small | Large |
| Typical use | Games, AR/VR, web | Sculpting, film, renders, baking source |
What is the low poly art style?
As an art style, low poly embraces visible facets: flat-shaded faces, simple shapes and often solid colors instead of detailed textures. It is popular in indie games, illustrations and motion graphics because it reads clearly, looks clean and renders quickly.
How do you make a low poly model?
Model it by hand with few polygons from the start, or reduce an existing detailed model. Reducing works in two ways: decimation removes polygons automatically, and retopology rebuilds a clean new mesh over the original shape.
- Modeling by hand: start from simple shapes in Blender or Maya and add only the edges you need
- Decimation: a quick automatic reduction, such as Blender's Decimate modifier. Fast, but the edge flow is messy
- Retopology: a new, clean mesh that follows the original surface, with textures baked across. Better for animation and texturing
Smart Low Poly in 3D AI Studio does AI retopology on any model: it rebuilds the mesh as 500-20,000 triangles or 500-10,000 quads and bakes the original textures onto it. To create a low poly model from scratch, the AI low poly generator produces low poly models and characters directly.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. A good low poly model uses its polygons where they matter and gets fine detail from textures and normal maps, so it can look excellent while running fast. Low poly is about efficiency, or a deliberate style, not about a worse result.
Polycount is the number of polygons in a model, usually counted in triangles for games. It is the main number to watch when a model has to run in real time, together with texture size and the number of materials.
