# Connect ChatGPT (Connectors & MCP)

Add 3D AI Studio to ChatGPT as a custom MCP connector in developer mode, sign in, and generate textured 3D models and images right inside your ChatGPT chats.

ChatGPT cannot create 3D models on its own. With the 3D AI Studio connector added, it can: you ask for a model in the chat, the generation runs on 3D AI Studio, and a real textured mesh with downloadable files comes back.

## What you need

- A **3D AI Studio account on a paid plan**.
- A **ChatGPT plan that supports custom connectors.** Availability depends on your ChatGPT plan and, for Business and Enterprise workspaces, on what your admin allows.
- The connector URL: `https://mcp.3daistudio.com/mcp`

> **Menus look different?** ChatGPT renames and moves its connector settings often, so the steps below can go out of date quickly. Look for **Connectors**, **Apps**, or **Developer mode** in Settings, or simply ask ChatGPT itself. It usually knows the current way (turn on web search):

## Setup

### Open the connector settings

In ChatGPT on the web or desktop, open **Settings → Connectors** (in some versions: **Apps & Connectors**).

If you do not see a **Create** button, open **Advanced settings** in the same section and turn on **Developer mode**. ChatGPT requires it for custom connectors on some plans.

### Create the connector

Click **Create** and fill in:

| Name | `3D AI Studio` |
| Description | `Generate 3D models and images` (optional) |
| MCP server URL | `https://mcp.3daistudio.com/mcp` |
| Authentication | `OAuth` |

Confirm that you trust the application if ChatGPT asks, then click **Create**.

### Sign in and authorize

A 3D AI Studio page opens:

1. Sign in with your 3D AI Studio account.
2. Review what ChatGPT will be able to do.
3. Under **Use credits from**, keep **Personal** or choose a team.
4. Click **Authorize**.

### Use it in a chat

Start a new chat, open the **+** or tools menu in the message box, and select **3D AI Studio** (with Developer mode, it is listed under the developer tools). Then ask:

> "Make a three headed wolf statue I can 3D print."

## Check that it worked

Ask ChatGPT: **"Use 3D AI Studio to check my credit balance."** It should call the connector and answer with a number. The connection also appears under **Connected Apps** in [Settings → AI Assistants (MCP)](https://www.3daistudio.com/Dashboard?settings=mcp) on 3D AI Studio.

## What it looks like in ChatGPT

> **Name the tool in your request.** Say "**use 3D AI Studio** to make this 3D". Otherwise ChatGPT tends to reach for its own built in image generator first.

- ChatGPT starts the generation and checks on it until it is finished. 3D models take 1 to 5 minutes; images take seconds.
- Depending on your ChatGPT version, the finished result shows as a card or as a link. Either way, the model is saved to your [dashboard](https://www.3daistudio.com/Dashboard), where you can view it in 3D and download it in any format.

## ChatGPT specific fixes

| Problem | Fix |
| --- | --- |
| No **Create** button under Connectors | Turn on **Developer mode** under Advanced settings, or check that your ChatGPT plan or workspace allows custom connectors |
| ChatGPT answers without using 3D AI Studio | Select 3D AI Studio from the tools menu in the chat, or say "use 3D AI Studio to..." |
| ChatGPT asks you to connect again | Open **Settings → Connectors**, select 3D AI Studio and connect again |
| Creating the connector fails | Check the URL is exactly `https://mcp.3daistudio.com/mcp` and that authentication is set to OAuth |

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can ChatGPT generate 3D models?

Not by itself. ChatGPT has no 3D generation engine, so on its own it can at best write code for simple shapes. Connected to 3D AI Studio, it can generate real, textured 3D models with downloadable GLB, FBX, OBJ, STL, USDZ and 3MF files. ### Do I need an API key for ChatGPT?

No. ChatGPT signs in to 3D AI Studio through a normal login page (OAuth). No key is created or stored.

### Is it the same as using the website?

It uses the same AI models, the same credits and the same dashboard as the website. The difference is that you ask for things in your ChatGPT conversation instead of using the website's tools.
