# Unity Integration

How to import a 3D model into Unity: drag the FBX into Assets, fix URP materials, set up rigged characters as Humanoid and optimize for mobile.

To import a 3D AI Studio model into Unity, download it as **FBX** and drag the file into your project's **Assets** folder. Unity imports the mesh, materials and textures automatically and creates a prefab you can drop into any scene.

| | |
| --- | --- |
| **Recommended format** | FBX (GLB needs the GLTFast or UnityGLTF package) |
| **Import** | Drag the file into the Assets folder |
| **Shaders** | Standard, URP and HDRP pick up the textures |
| **Characters** | Rigged FBX, Animation Type Humanoid |
| **Mobile budget** | Under 10,000 triangles per model |

## How do I import a 3D model into Unity?

Drag the FBX file into the **Assets** folder. Unity imports it and creates a prefab, which you then drag into your scene.

1. Download the model as FBX from your [Dashboard](https://www.3daistudio.com/Dashboard)
2. Drag the .fbx file into your Unity **Assets** folder (or a subfolder)
3. Unity imports the model and creates a prefab
4. Drag the prefab into your scene

## Should I use FBX or GLB in Unity?

Use FBX: Unity supports it natively with materials, rigging and animation. GLB works too, but only after installing a glTF package. Only have a GLB from somewhere else? Convert it with the free [GLB to FBX converter](https://www.3daistudio.com/convert/glb-to-fbx).

| | FBX | GLB |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Unity support | Native | Needs **GLTFast** (recommended, via Package Manager) or **UnityGLTF** |
| Materials | Picked up by Standard, URP and HDRP shaders | Handled by the package |
| Rigging and animation | Full support | Supported by the package |

After installing a glTF package, drag .glb files into Assets like any other model.

## Why do my materials look wrong in Unity?

Usually the textures were not assigned to the shader slots. Select the model, open the **Materials** tab in the import settings, make sure **Use Embedded Materials** is selected, and reassign the albedo, normal and roughness textures to the URP or Standard shader slots if needed.

FBX materials from 3D AI Studio come with albedo, normal and roughness textures that Unity's Standard and URP Lit shaders read automatically in most cases.

## How do I set up a rigged character in Unity?

Import the rigged FBX, open the **Rig** tab, set **Animation Type** to **Humanoid** and click **Apply**. Unity maps the bones to its Humanoid rig, so Mixamo animations and your own clips work through an Animator Controller.

1. Import the FBX from the [Rigging tool](https://docs.3daistudio.com/processing/rigging)
2. Select the model in the Project panel
3. Open the **Rig** tab in the Inspector
4. Set **Animation Type** to **Humanoid** for characters, or **Generic** for other creatures
5. Click **Apply**

## How many polygons should a model have for Unity?

Keep models under 10,000 triangles for mobile games. On PC and console, hero assets can use 50,000-100,000 triangles. Set the exact target with the [Remesh tool](https://docs.3daistudio.com/processing/remesh) before downloading.

Further optimization in Unity:

- Set up **LOD Groups** for models seen at different distances
- Enable **mesh compression** in the import settings for a smaller build
- Reduce polygons before import to save draw calls and memory

## Common workflows

- **Props and environments:** import a static FBX, add colliders and place it in the scene
- **Characters:** import a rigged FBX, set it up as Humanoid and attach an Animator
- **Product visualization:** import a detailed model and set up camera and lighting

Don't have a model yet? Generate one with [Image to 3D](https://www.3daistudio.com/ImageTo3D) or [Text to 3D](https://www.3daistudio.com/TextTo3D) and import it into Unity in minutes. Format details are in [Export Formats](https://docs.3daistudio.com/export-formats).

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Do the models work with URP and HDRP?

Yes. The FBX materials include albedo, normal and roughness textures that the URP Lit shader picks up automatically. If a material looks wrong, select "Use Embedded Materials" in the import settings or reassign the textures to the shader slots.

### Can an AI agent work inside the Unity Editor?

Yes, with a Unity MCP server. It lets Claude Code, Cursor or Codex create GameObjects, edit C# and run tests, while the [3D AI Studio MCP connector](https://docs.3daistudio.com/mcp/overview) generates the models. Our [Unity MCP guide](https://www.3daistudio.com/3d-generator-ai-comparison-alternatives-guide/unity-mcp) compares Unity's own server with the community options.
