# Godot Integration

How to import a 3D model into Godot 4: drag the GLB into the FileSystem dock, edit PBR materials, add collision and optimize AI-generated models for mobile.

To import a 3D AI Studio model into Godot 4, download it as **GLB** and drag the file into the **FileSystem** dock. Godot imports it as a scene with PBR materials and textures, ready to drag into your level.

| | |
| --- | --- |
| **Recommended format** | GLB (native glTF 2.0 support) |
| **Import** | Drag into the FileSystem dock |
| **Materials** | Albedo, normal, roughness and metallic read automatically |
| **Collision** | Mesh > Create Trimesh Static Body or Simplified Convex Shape |
| **Mobile budget** | Under 10,000 triangles per model |

## How do I import a 3D model into Godot?

Drag the GLB into the **FileSystem** dock. Godot imports it as a scene, which you then drag into the 3D viewport or scene tree.

1. Download the model as GLB from your [Dashboard](https://www.3daistudio.com/Dashboard)
2. Drag the .glb file into the **FileSystem** dock
3. Godot imports it as a scene
4. Drag the scene into your 3D viewport or scene tree

## Should I use GLB or FBX in Godot?

Use GLB. Godot 4 supports glTF 2.0 natively, and the GLB keeps geometry, PBR materials and textures in one file. FBX also works but may need the FBX2glTF plugin depending on your setup. Simpler: turn the FBX into a GLB with the free [FBX to GLB converter](https://www.3daistudio.com/convert/fbx-to-glb).

## How do I edit the materials in Godot?

Godot reads the PBR textures from the GLB automatically. To change them, select the **MeshInstance3D** node and edit or override the material in the Inspector.

1. Instance the scene in your level
2. Select the **MeshInstance3D** node
3. Expand the **Material** section in the Inspector
4. Edit the material, or override it with a new **StandardMaterial3D**

## How do I add collision to a model in Godot?

Select the **MeshInstance3D** node and use the **Mesh** menu: **Create Trimesh Static Body** for complex shapes or **Create Simplified Convex Shape** for faster physics. Both add a StaticBody3D with a CollisionShape3D as children.

For characters and moving objects, use **CharacterBody3D** or **RigidBody3D** instead of a static body.

## How do I keep performance good in Godot?

Keep mobile models under 10,000 triangles and reduce high-poly models with the [Remesh tool](https://docs.3daistudio.com/processing/remesh) before downloading.

- Use **MultiMeshInstance3D** to render many copies of the same model, such as trees or rocks
- Check the scale after import and adjust the node's **Scale** to match your game's units
- GLB keeps imports clean: one file, no missing textures

## Common workflows

- **Props and game assets:** import the GLB, add a StaticBody3D with a collision shape, place it in the level
- **Environments:** import several models, arrange them and add lighting
- **Characters:** import a rigged GLB from the [Rigging tool](https://docs.3daistudio.com/processing/rigging) and play animations with an AnimationPlayer

Don't have a model yet? Generate one with [Image to 3D](https://www.3daistudio.com/ImageTo3D) or [Text to 3D](https://www.3daistudio.com/TextTo3D) and import it into Godot in minutes. Format details are in [Export Formats](https://docs.3daistudio.com/export-formats).

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can an AI agent work inside the Godot editor?

Yes, with a Godot MCP server. It lets Claude Code, Cursor or Codex build scenes, edit GDScript and run your game, while the [3D AI Studio MCP connector](https://docs.3daistudio.com/mcp/overview) generates the models. Our [Godot MCP guide](https://www.3daistudio.com/3d-generator-ai-comparison-alternatives-guide/godot-mcp) compares the main servers.
